In 1967, three friends were living in Washington: Scape who is an outdoor enthusiast, Murray who is an engineer, and Jan who is a skilled seamstress.

So, when Murray won a design award from Alcoa for creating the first aluminum adjustable backpack frame, Murray asked his girlfriend, Jan, to create a backpack style for his new aluminum frame, promising her that if she succeeded he would name the company after her. And so it was, and the JanSport brand was born.

In 1972, the three founders began inviting their friends for what is now the longest back-to-back mass mountain climb, which has become an annual event for JanSport.
